Commissioning a Painting
The magic of creating has been part of my life for as long as I remember. Creating art, as a lifetime practice, gradually reveals what is closest to one’s soul. My work is mostly inspired by awe and gratitude for the beauty, complexity and harmony of our universe and the miracle of life itself. It is my hope these expressions will awaken an awareness in others, for the miracles surrounding us as we go about our daily lives.
Portrait and Figure
I have returned to portrait and figure consistently for 50 years with my fascination in the human condition… and the human spirit. Making a portrait requires both seeing analytically and sensing holistically: presence, energy, emotional attitude expressed in posture and expression and a likeness of a person are all needed. These qualities combined with observed and intuited color and value help me to portray the unique and human person within an original work of art.
Landscape
Being in a beloved place is an experience unlike others in our lives. Each place has a unique energy to which we respond– physically, sensually, emotionally, spiritually. The earth gifts us with spaces that catalyse certain feelings- a powerful connection that we may wish to preserve. The place may also be filled with memories which may be incorporated into the scene. The visual reminder of these treasured experiences may be enjoyed over and over in a work of fine art.
Many nature subjects reflect some type of creation process going on such as: the energy of fluid water interacting with solid rock; trees/plants are communal beings that are rooted to one place while having lived for years with the elements- the interaction of light, air, temperature, water, earth and its creatures. The visual elements of light and shade, temperature and value of the colors, grace of line and shapes… these are living ways of entering and recording a cherished place to be.
Still Life
Objects which have history and memories attached to them may be composed into a powerful arrangement which preserves the objects and may share a narrative .
